I’ve got a neglected, seriously awful algae-filled green-water pond (about 500 gallons) that I’m having to bring back to some semblance of not yucky. I don’t expect this UV wand to do it all by itself, but I’ve had it plugged in now for 36 hours and I can tell there is a difference. After I give my algae-fix some time to work, too, my plan is to permanently float a barley straw bale in the pond, get duckweed and azolla growing over the surface to shade the water, and then plug this in to keep everything so the water won’t get so yucky again. What I dislike about this product is that the cord is too short. It says it’s supposed to be ten feet long, but my whole patio from the outlet to the pond is ten feet, and it only extends about halfway across even with the wand floating right at the top of the pond (a few inches overhang from the ground at most). I had to run an extension cord to the outlet, so that means I won’t be able to keep it plugged in unless I buy an additional waterproofing box for the connection. The good thing about this is that it only requires about 17 watts of power to run. That means I can hook it up to a suitable solar panel/power station if so desired, and it won’t break the bank to keep it on all the time. I’m also going to think about using it to clean sinks full of harvested veggies and fruits from my garden or the produce stand. The instructions warn, however, that it’s not good for it to come into contact with the human body, so don’t try sticking it in your ice water bath and leaving it there. Use it to clean and sanitize the bath but then remove it before plunging in. [...]
